KIEM Logistics is a new scheme aimed at developing logistics innovations that provide solutions to societal challenges.

Innovation in logistics is more important than ever for solving societal challenges such as the energy crisis and increasing Dutch earning power. A new KIEM scheme focusing on this topic opens on 26 February. The aim of this scheme is to develop logistics innovations that provide solutions to societal challenges.

Exploring logistics praxis questions

Marcus van Leeuwen, programme manager involved in the logistics theme, on KIEM Logistics: "With this new thematic shoot of the KIEM tribe, SIA, in collaboration with TKI Dinalog, enables practice-oriented research that makes significant contributions to 5 societal challenges we all face."

The aim of KIEM Logistics is to (exploratory) research new questions from logistics practice. The research activities are carried out by a network of knowledge institutions and practice partners. With KIEM Logistics, the Top Sector Logistics, TKI Dinalog and Regieorgaan SIA encourage both networking and the exploration of practical questions. Follow-up projects and innovations can build on these questions.

5 Societal challenges central

There are 5 tasks at the heart of KIEM Logistics. These come from TKI Dinalog's National Knowledge Agenda on Logistics. Applications that fall under one of these 5 challenges fit into KIEM Logistics:

  • circular economy

  • energy transition and reducing harmful emissions

  • resilience and disruption

  • population growth and demographics

  • social earning and broad prosperity

Bas van Bree, Operational Director of TKI Dinalog on KIEM Logistics:

Logistics can make a solid contribution to solving major societal challenges. It is necessary to connect relevant knowledge for this with the issues that arise in practice. With the KIEM Logistics, we can make a significant contribution to this."

Space for 12 applications

The grant ceiling for this call for proposals is €450,000. A maximum of 12 applications are expected to be awarded in this grant round. Regieorgaan SIA and TKI Dinalog (TKI Logistics Foundation on behalf of the Top Sector Logistics) jointly fund KIEM Logistiek.

About KIEM

Jerry Verschuren, programme manager and coordinator of KIEM:

"We are very pleased with how energetically we are expanding the thematic KIEM palette with this new scheme. We are also eager to see what the future holds in terms of themes."

KIEM is a low-threshold, one-year scheme. It allows universities of applied sciences and practice partners to explore a research question, with a budget of €40,000. This often leads to follow-up research from which great solutions to questions from practice emerge.
