Northern Netherlands as catalyst for logistics innovation: Working together on logistics of the future in the region.A inspiring regional visit focused on the unique strength of the Northern Netherlands. Representatives from companies, researchers and policymakers gathered to discuss circular economy, logistics innovation and energy transition. Led by expert table chairs, 3 round tables explored challenges and opportunities in logistics to further strengthen the region as a sustainable frontrunner.

Circular economy: logistics as key to success

The logistics sector was presented as an enabler for the circular transition. Heerenveen, with its strong education base and logistics and function as a hub, sees growth opportunities in collaboration with companies and education focused on circularity. Yet the development of concrete circular business models lags behind, and support from national subsidies is limited, a challenge that affects both Friesland and Groningen.

Projects such as InnoWATr and Circulands in Eemshaven show how European cooperation and planning visions are bringing the circular future closer. However, regional cooperation and national support remain essential ingredients for success.

Logistics innovation: room for progress

The logistics strength of the Northern Netherlands was further discussed with themes such as autonomous transport, smart shipping and digitalisation. Innovations such as those around the European Hyperloop Centre, modularly designed e-barges and digital twins for business parks highlighted the region's potential. At the same time, bottlenecks were identified, such as the limited scalability of innovations to national and international levels, and the lag in subsidies and infrastructure compared to other regions in the Netherlands.

A key focus here is the labour market. The shortage of qualified staff plays broadly, from truck drivers to crane operators. At the same time, it showed the power of cooperation, such as staff exchanges and digital workshops for SMEs.

Energy transition: still a long way to go

The energy transition was discussed in the context of challenges for transport companies in particular. Electrification often proves financially unfeasible for smaller operators, while national inconsistency in policy threatens frontrunners. Yet parties such as Green Planet and Arriva see opportunities: HVO fuels and smart charging strategies can bridge the gap to full electrification.

The northern Netherlands is increasingly profiling itself as a hydrogen hub, with a strong industrial focus and promising applications for transport. The region is also committed to shared charging plazas and business park approaches, but stresses that trust and cooperation between companies takes time. While the need for sustainability is felt, it requires consistent policies and financial incentives to reach the tipping point.

A powerful call for cooperation

Discussions during the region visit made it clear that the northern Netherlands has unique opportunities to strengthen logistics in the region, but that acceleration is required. Whether it concerns circularity, logistics innovation or energy transition, the key lies in cooperation between companies, governments and knowledge institutions. At the same time, consistency in policy, vision and support from the national government is key.
