ECOLOGIC (Emission Control and Logistics Optimization for Green Infrastructure Construction)
The construction sector is of great economic importance, but logistical challenges make the planning and execution of construction projects vulnerable. Bad weather, traffic jams, illness, or technical malfunctions can lead to delays, higher costs, and additional CO₂ and NOx emissions. This not only hinders efficiency but also the achievement of sustainability goals. Furthermore, there is often a lack of reliable insight into the actual environmental impact of construction processes. Data is fragmented and partly unreliable, making it difficult to take the right measures. The ECOLOGIC project aims to solve this by making the logistics surrounding construction projects smarter, more predictable, and more sustainable.
ECOLOGIC is developing a Carbon Digital Twin: a digital representation of construction logistics that collects and processes data in real time. This enables companies to respond to disruptions in a timely manner while reducing their CO₂ en NOx emissions.
The approach follows three steps – the “Triple A”:
• Acquire: collect data on transport, weather, material flows, and machinery;
• Anticipate: use smart analytics to predict where disruptions may occur;
• Adapt: immediately adjust logistics planning to work more efficiently and in a more environmentally friendly way.
The application is being tested and improved in two Living Labs, around two construction projects where the benefits are immediately visible. The expected results of the project are:
• 10–15% higher operational efficiency;
• 15–20% reduction in emissions and energy consumption;
• 8–14% cost reduction due to fewer delays and less waste.
In addition, ECOLOGIC provides a reliable data environment for collaboration, knowledge about sustainable construction logistics, and practical tools that can be applied across the sector.
