Games

Serious games are a useful and effective tool for learning, gathering feedback and innovating. That is why serious games are delivered in many of our projects. This is how we help each other innovate.

Some of the games developed in our projects can be viewed or downloaded here.

Supply Chain Game

The supply chain game is a "board game" for (basically) one player whose task is to manage the supply chain logistics as well as possible. In doing so, she must decide how many materials to buy, which products to assemble from those materials, and where to send these products.

An electronic version of this board game has been made. The electronic version automatically detects how much stock is in each location. Based on that, points are tracked. But based on that information, the player can also be advised, based on artificial intelligence (Deep Reinforcement Learning), what the best decisions to make are. The whole thing is thus an illustration of how AI can be applied in supply chain logistics practice.

It is designed as a tool to understand the objectives and behaviour of different stakeholders in city logistics. It is also designed to experience the importance of communication between stakeholders, experience decision-making problems in transport operations and learn how to intervene when things go wrong.

Smooth Sailing

The amount of freight transport in the Netherlands continues to grow. This requires, among other things, efficient use of the waterways and hence efficient use of the locks on these routes. The current rotation principle (order in which ships enter the lock) follows the 'first come, first served' principle. For skippers and logistics parties, this causes unreliability in the logistics chain. The game Smooth Sailing gives players insight into the advantages and disadvantages of the current lock rotation principle.

  • For whom: Logistics market players and government

  • Number of players: 5 teams of 1 or 2 players

Innovating can be taught

'Innovate you can learn' is a role-playing game in which participants experience what is asked of you if you participate in innovation in your transport or logistics company. The board game centres on the case that the company wants to introduce a 'training coach' as an innovation. This training coach helps the company with people-oriented management, making it easier for employees to get involved in innovation and change. Several 'bottlenecks' come up in the game. Solving them requires cooperation, whereby you get an eye for what is going on in other departments.

  • For whom: Middle management and employees within a company

  • Number of players: 3 to 6 players

You’ve got freight

Players of You've Got Freight dive into the role of a freight forwarder transporting containers from port to hinterland. Players get a personal experience of the challenges posed by multimodality and synchromodality. The biggest challenge in this is finding the right balance: fighting for individual gains versus looking for joint benefits. Players thus become aware of the essence of cooperation, which is needed to make synchromodality a success.
The game is used in education in lesson programmes and for research. In the public sector for brainstorming sessions on policy and creating awareness on the subject. In the transport sector for team building and innovation sessions for synchromodality. Since early 2021, this game has also been available in a digital version.

Introduction to Logistics

Young people use their mobile phones the most to gather information. 21CC developed the app 'Rondje Logistiek' on behalf of Top Sector Logistics with the aim of:

  1. Excite pupils and students for logistics as a future field of work.

  2. Increase the inflow to logistics courses.

  3. Support companies in finding, enthusing and training new employees.

  4. Support municipalities and regions in labour market participation projects.

The current app was developed in cooperation with KennisDC Logistiek and Port of Moerdijk and consists of various games, videos, mini-modules and a competition element, is infinitely expandable, further developable and duplicable to different (logistics) environments.
